In May 2024, our world changed when my son, Archie, was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at just 8 years old. It was a time of overwhelming change for our family, we had no idea how life-altering this condition would be, how many myths surround it, or just how much incredible support the NHS provides to families like ours.
Adjusting to this new reality was challenging, but we quickly realised something important: Archie’s diagnosis doesn’t define him, it empowers him. And as a family, we wanted to take that mindset further. That’s why Richard Pearce Wealth Management is now committed to raising awareness and fundraising for type 1 diabetes.
Before Archie’s diagnosis, like many people, I didn’t fully understand what type 1 diabetes really meant. There are so many misconceptions, people often confuse it with type 2 diabetes, believe it’s caused by diet or lifestyle, or think that managing it is as simple as taking insulin. In reality, type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune condition with no cure, and managing it requires constant monitoring, careful planning, and resilience.
By raising awareness, we hope to help others understand the daily challenges that come with type 1 diabetes and, most importantly, to show children like Archie that they are not alone.
One thing that stood out to us during this journey was the unbelievable support provided by the NHS and diabetes charities. From specialist nurses to dietitians, technology support, and emotional care, the level of dedication and expertise we received was something we’ll always be grateful for.
To give back, we’re committed to fundraising for diabetes charities that provide essential research, education, and support for families affected by type 1 diabetes. Whether it’s taking part in sponsored events, raising money in the community, or simply spreading awareness, we want to play our part in making a difference.
Above all, our mission is to show Archie and other with the condition that type 1 diabetes is not a limitation, but a strength. Managing this condition takes resilience, discipline, and courage, all qualities that will shape him into an even stronger person as he grows.
We want him to see that his diagnosis is his superpower, one that he can use to inspire, support, and educate others. And as a family, we will stand by him every step of the way.
